Default Decoking

Who's had it done, what symptoms did you have, what did it cost and did it resolve said symptoms?

Me, lack of power / hesitancy / missfire / high oil consumption, free under warranty (3 days of work at BMW for reference however), yes.

Sounds like exactly my problem, it's running like a pile of crap. Nearly stalls - and sometimes does - when idle. I don't have warranty and have been quoted £1950 inc VAT.

I might take up their offer of 1 hours labour at £118 + VAT for them to check out the coking situation and also see what goodwill is available from BMW. They mentioned they had done lots of goodwill for that problem in the past..

Ouch, sounds expensive. As a possible alternative, could you buy the BMW extended warranty and then get it sorted under that ? If the warranty costs £500 then that would mean you would only have paid ~25% of the cost to get it sorted plus would be covered for anything else that could go wrong for the year... would be interested to hear what their goodwill gesture cost would be and how it compared to trying the above ???

Fingers crossed for you dude

Interesting thought. Warranty will be £465 a year but there is this:

I can confirm that my vehicle has been fully serviced in accordance with the manufacturing recommendations/intervals and has not been modified in anyway.

I accept that my warranty/assistance package will commence on 23 January 2012 and will not cover any pre-existing faults or defects that occur prior to the warranty inception.

Hmmmmm

mmmm indeed

Would be interested to know what they consider as modified as according to insurance companies anything that isnt fitted as standard from factory is a modification. For example, my old car had sun protection glass (tints) and my insurance company considered that to be a modification and charged accordingly - thats even though it was fitted from the factory BUT it isnt on the boggo stock spec list (ie its an option).

If the warranty document doesnt specify what constitutes a modification then perhaps that is a grey area that you could exploit... ? Using the insurance company example a modfication could include fitting JCW wheels or bodykit for example which would render their warranty useless...

As a back up you could remove all engine related mods and return to standard so that the engine is completely stock that would mean that the parts affected by a warranty claim would be completely standard.

On the prior defect point - when taking a car to BMW for warranty work they wont fix a timing chain tensioner (for example) purely on your word that its the timing chain tensioner that is broken, they would have to take the car in and do diagnosis checks on the car first, then most probably rebook you in to get it fixed at a later time (workload dependant). By the same token, if they havent had a look at your car yet and said you need a decoke, and thats how I read the above posts, then they havent identified a fault and as such there isnt currently fault with your car... so, until they take it in (ie after you get the warranty cover) there are no current defects/faults - I think that logic follows even if I havent explained it too well ??

I think the wording of their limitations (as you quote) are open to interpretation should you need to argue it although Im no expert and its just as I read it...

I think that it's appalling that new cars need to have a de-coke, this was something that older cars required after many thousands of miles with shittier fuels then we use today!

I've done this already in preparation.

Going to get it in with Cooper in new year to have a decoke, assuming goodwill from BMW can be done. Evolve IC to be delivered end of Jan and then hybrid turbo end of Feb hopefully
