Actually mine came off by accident once - it is just a case of a good firm grip and tug upwards. It is normally attached to the leather surround, and try not to knock yourself out as it can be quite stiff

Ok, preparing to get shot down with comments...

You might find it easier to do from the passenger seat as there is more room to manoeuvre.
Cup both hands under the knob, spreading your fingers each side of the shaft.
Then it's a swift and hard tug, being careful you don't injure yourself on the interior.

I've checked on the MINI spares website for your year of MINI, and there is no screw, clip or anything else that could be holding it in place, it is just literally a ridge on the knob and shaft that interlock.

And good news, some cunning googling has produced an excellent video of an englishman cupping his knob and pulling it off - I suspect the shaft prep will be required too clicky

Ahhh dear Ayde what you wrote did make me chuckle... Alot!

But you are a legend thank you, however mine doesn't look like that underneath the knob, it's almost fixed like it's bot mention to be taken off?? I even removed the centre console and handbrake gaiter to see what's going on but it didn't give me any clues as to how to get it off... I even straddled my gear stick, cupped and tugged but nope nothing

I'm off down to mini tomorrow to get them to check out a small rust bubble so will quiz them tomorrow!

But Ayde thank you, your pulling knobs off research was really appreciated ....... Great cupping of shaft and knob too!!!!
