Default High Oil Consumption?

Today I have been filling the Cooper S up with more oil.

Had an oil change in October and since then, a litre in December and two litres today! Seems a lot in 3500 miles. Can't find any leaks, any advice?

I had to put two litres in over the past 6 months Toby, so seems to be quite common.

Mmmmm, I'm still on the same 1 litre bottle they gave me when I collected the car! R56's are supposed to use more oil - a lot more oil.

Yeah mine is about that, it drinks the stuff. Im buying oil every month or two and topping it up regularly. Ive found with sport mode on and driving hard you can get LESS then 1 litre per 1K miles..

And no i dont have an oil leak.

Tis the price of 'clean' cars. They have to run SO hot compared to dirtier cars - it boils off the oil I guess. We have a similar thing with the diesel engines we use at work, to mee the latest legislation, they're running hotter and hotter to burns off the hydrocarbons, particulates etc...

I wonder if the oil consumed in a year offsets the cost of road tax for an R53?

R56 engines from Sept 2011 build onwards have a 5% increase in BHP, but somehow have dropped the emissions a bit further down one road tax band - road tax is now £110 a year. The One D and Cooper D are both still £zero a year.

Perhaps that's why we get more mpg from the petrol, we substituting it by burning oil too, which is why they sometimes sound like a diesel petrol hybrid when cold.

I use about 10ml per mile averaged out... having just had a decoke I've been told this should go down and that my mpgs should improve too

Fingers crossed...
