Question tahcometer problems

hi there all,
i have just joined the club and am from new Zealand. i have a problem with my 72' clubman p/van. it has the gt dash (three gauges) and the r.p.m. gauge doesn't work properly. before i go ripping bits out and spending lots of cash, i thought i would ask around if anyone new.

problem-
when the engine is running the r.p.m. gauge bounces up and down when im driving, its like its trying to work and peaks at what i think is the right reading, but it just keep fluctuating up and down.

mods-
it has electronic ignition, alternator, uniden 5 star rated alarm and immobilizer, and an after market coil pack(round cylindrical type)

any help on the subject would be great. cheers, stephen

Hiya Stephen, welcome to the forum.

I'll get one of our classic owners to take a look at this and see if he can help.

just another thought, could it be something to do with the ignition being that its not standard and would the msd coil pack burn out the rev counter circuits due to to much current? cheers

i'll have to pop out and have a look at how i did mine, i'm sure the uprated coil won't affect it. i did have problems with a rover replica rev counter that i had in my old dash as it always read double, looked good as it red lined in top gear everywhere

OK i have found the problem. as the car is 37 years old, the wires are a bit crappy, so its no surprise that the signal wire was broken inside the outer sheath. when moving tit around in the engine bay, it works intermittently. so i have replaced the wire and its all better now. cheers all.
