it could be to do with your electronic ignition. so have you still got a distributer or do you have an ingnition pack? i will be able to sort this when i have had a word with a mate

just another thought, could it be something to do with the ignition being that its not standard and would the msd coil pack burn out the rev counter circuits due to to much current? cheers

i'll have to pop out and have a look at how i did mine, i'm sure the uprated coil won't affect it. i did have problems with a rover replica rev counter that i had in my old dash as it always read double, looked good as it red lined in top gear everywhere

OK i have found the problem. as the car is 37 years old, the wires are a bit crappy, so its no surprise that the signal wire was broken inside the outer sheath. when moving tit around in the engine bay, it works intermittently. so i have replaced the wire and its all better now. cheers all.
